What Paperwork Do I Need to Scrap My Car?
Everything you need to know about documents, registration papers, and ID when selling your car for scrap on the Gold Coast.
One of the most common questions we get is: "Do I need paperwork to scrap my car?" The short answer is it helps, but it is not always required. Here is a clear breakdown of what you need.
Ideal Documents to Have
For the smoothest process, have the following ready:
- Certificate of Registration This is the document issued by Queensland TMR showing the vehicle is registered in your name.
- Photo ID A current driver licence or passport to confirm your identity.
- Keys If available, but not mandatory (see our "Do I Need the Keys?" page for details).
What If I Have Lost My Registration Papers?
Lost or damaged registration papers are not a dealbreaker. We can still remove and pay for your vehicle in most cases. Here is what we do instead:
- Verify the vehicle identity using the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) or number plate
- Confirm ownership through alternative documents (bill of sale, previous rego details, insurance papers)
- Complete a simple proof-of-ownership declaration if needed
Good news: You do not need to order replacement registration papers from TMR before calling us. Just give us the details you have and we will work with you.
Do I Need a Roadworthy Certificate?
No. A roadworthy certificate (RWC) is only needed when selling a car privately to another driver who intends to register it. When you sell your car to a licensed removal and recycling service like ours, no RWC is required the vehicle can be in any condition.
Not required: Roadworthy certificate, pink slip, safety certificate, or any pre-sale inspection. None of these apply to scrap car removal.
After Removal: Cancel Your Registration
Once your car has been collected, you should notify the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) to cancel the vehicle registration. This prevents you from being charged ongoing rego fees and CTP insurance premiums. We will provide you with a receipt of removal to support this process. You can cancel online via the TMR website or at a transport and main roads customer service centre.
Summary Checklist
- Registration papers helpful but not required
- Photo ID (driver licence or passport) preferred
- Keys helpful but not required
- Roadworthy certificate NOT required
- Cancel registration with TMR after removal
